  5.     DIED. Dimitrios I, 77, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople
  6. and spiritual leader of the world's 150 million Eastern
  7. Orthodox Christians; in Istanbul. Elected in 1972, Dimitrios
  8. conferred with Pope John Paul II during his 1979 trip to Turkey
  9. and at the Vatican in 1987, promising to work toward closer ties
  10. between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. In
  11. 1987 Dimitrios became the first Ecumenical Patriarch in nearly
  12. 400 years to visit the Soviet Union and last year the first to
  13. visit the U.S.
